Currently there are many certifications for biodegradable plastic that are classified into many types depending on the product produced in the world. Each biodegradable plastic product line will need different certifications for bioplastic!
How can consumers know if a product is biodegradable or conventional? You can base on the product’s appearance, logo, or product information provided by the manufacturing company to choose the right product, biodegradable goods.
Join with Biopolymer Vietnam to learn about popular biodegradable plastic certifications
1. OK Biobased certification
What is OK Biobased certification?
OK Biobased certification is a verification system that verifies the origin of a product to classify and analyze whether a product is made from fossil (petroleum) or renewable (natural) materials.
Issuer: TUV Australia organization
What criterias need to be met to get an OK Biobased certification?
Each biodegradable plastic product is required to meet the following requirements:
- The total carbon content of the product should be at least 30%.
- Carbon content of renewable raw materials (biobased) from nature is at least 20%.
- There are 4 levels corresponding to the number of stars on the label:
- 1 star: biobased content from 20% – 40%
- 2 stars: biobased content from 40% – 60
- 3 stars: biobased content from 60% – 80
- 4 stars: biobased content over 80%
For sustainable development, the OK Biobased certification aims at the habit of using products that are not of fossil fuel origin and do not emit greenhouse gases.
2. DIN CERTCO certification
What is DIN CERTCO certification?
DIN-Geprüf bio-based certification is a certificate of biodegradation under industrial processing conditions issued by DIN CERTCO based on ASTM D6866:2012-01 and “OK Biobased” certification – for articles with component content from renewable resources is 80% or more.
Issuer: DIN CERTCO organization
What criterias need to be met to get an DIN-Geprüf bio-based certification?
Each biodegradable plastic product is required to meet the following requirements:
- Must be at least 20% biobased according to ASTM D6866, CEN/TS 16137 or ISO 16620
- Must be at least 50% organic according to DIN 18128 or EN 13039
- There are three quality levels that indicate the biobased content of a biodegradable plastic product:
- Biobased 20% – 50%
- Biobased 50% – 85%
- Biobased > 85%
3. USDA Biobased certification
What is USDA Biobased certification?
The USDA Biobased certification lists the percentage of biobased ingredients in each product. This helps consumers recognize biobased products (renewable biological origin) and increases demand for products of biological origin.
Issuer: United Department of Agriculture organization
What criterias need to be met to get an USDA Biobased certification?
In addition to product information, applicants must submit ASTM D6866 and ISO 9001 biodegradability test results. Applicants must also provide USDA with the product’s brand name, contact information, and website URL.
USDA intends to conduct random ASTM D6866 testing of products to ensure compliance with minimum biological content requirements.
